What Is Welded Wire Mesh Fencing?

Quick Answer

Welded wire mesh fencing consists of steel wires arranged in a grid pattern and joined at each intersection by electrical resistance welding. Available in a range of wire gauges (12–19) and opening sizes (1x1 inch to 6x6 inches). Used for animal enclosures, garden protection, security fencing, and concrete reinforcement. The most common agricultural uses are chicken coops, small animal pens, and garden deer fencing.

How It's Made

Parallel horizontal wires and parallel vertical wires are arranged at right angles. An automated resistance welding process passes current through each intersection, fusing the wires together without solder or mechanical fastening. The result is a rigid, dimensionally stable grid. Galvanizing is applied either before welding (electro-galvanized, lighter coating) or after welding (hot-dip galvanized, heavier coating). Post-weld hot-dip galvanizing provides better corrosion protection at welds, which are the most vulnerable points.

Limitations for Livestock

Welded wire mesh is not ideal for large livestock (cattle, horses) because the weld points crack under sustained animal pressure. Large livestock leaning against welded mesh flex it beyond elastic limits, cracking welds and permanently deforming the mesh. For large livestock, woven wire (field fence) is more appropriate. Welded mesh excels at small animal containment and predator exclusion where light-to-moderate loads are involved.

Our Recommendation

Use welded wire mesh for chicken coops (1x1-inch hardware cloth), rabbit hutches, dog runs, garden deer fencing, and small animal enclosures. Use woven wire or high-tensile wire for cattle, horse, and large livestock pastures. Buying the right product for the application prevents the frustration of watching mesh deform under animal pressure within the first season.
